I have some kind of strange sixth sense of picking up sad songs. Like in this case, hidden behind noisy guitars and a rather catchy melody is a not too happy song. Of course I love it.
Japandroids – The house that heaven built is found on the record “Celebration rock” released in 2012.
Concert night again. La Sera is a group that I have not heard before but since I am a big fan of Katy “Kickball Katy” Goodman’s other group Vivian Girls I have high hopes when heading to the La Sera concert too.
La Sera – Please be my third eye is found on the record “La Sera sees the light” released in 2012.
Live tonight in Stockholm, Shearwater. Somehow I got the feeling that this will end up as a really good concert, this is music that is likely to get even better when played live. And played loud.
Shearwater – You as you were is found on the record “Animal joy” released in 2012.
Earlier today I watched the movie “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind” again. The last time I watched it was, well maybe five years ago, but it is a movie that I enjoy watching every now and then despite the fact that it is a very sad movie. Or maybe just because of this fact.
The basic idea of this movie is something that has crossed my mind a couple of times too, the ability of erasing memories. In some ways it would be great to be able to erase the memory of something traumatic that has happened in your life or erase the memories of someone who broke your heart.
But thinking twice I doubt that I would really like to do that. It may sound weird but I do believe it would be hard to appreciate the things in life that are really good and enjoyable if you never ever had to experience rough times.
Beck – Everybody’s gotta learn sometimes is found on the movie soundtrack “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind” released in 2004. The original version was recorded by The Korgis in 1980.
I guess it is fair to say that the summer is officially here. So are the summer songs, this is one great example of music that feels like summer all over it. Further on, a damn good music video too, not only because it feature images of my beloved Los Angeles.
Fanzine – LA is found on the single “LA” released in 2012.
Midsummer’s eve… According to the legend, one should pick seven different species of flowers and put them under the pillow. While sleeping you will dream of the one you will marry.
Last year I did this slightly wrong; I put seven women under my pillow and dreamt about flowers.
Celebrate the longest day of the year carefully, even Wikipedia point out that this is a day when people in Sweden drink heavily.
Soulsavers – Longest day is found on the record “The light the dead sea” released in 2012.
If you have been following my thoughts and ideas about music; you know I am a “lyricaholic”. In many cases that is what catches my attention when falling for a song that I have not heard before.
There other reasons too, one example is this song. The reason why I fell in love in with this song is the synthesizer sound start at 2.25 into the song. The song is really good the first two minutes and twenty-four seconds too but when Death In Vegas add that synthesizer sequence the song explodes and there is no going back.
Death In Vegas – Aisha is found on the record “The contino sessions” released in 1999.
Is it just me or is it a trend to include different kind of animals in the band names right now? Following a number of bears (“Grizzly Bear”, “Panda Bear”, “Bear In Heaven”) some wolves (“Sea wolf”, “Turbo wolf”, “Wolf parade”) and a number of horses (“Band Of Horses”, “Toy Horses”, “Horse Feathers”) it is now time to introduce the owl.
Owlmother scares me, the band name itself, the music too and not the least the music video. Still I cannot resist this song.
Owlmother – You cannot be touched is found on the forthcoming record “Räddhare” scheduled to be released in 2012.
So I got the news that Ultravox will play live in Sweden this coming autumn. I grew up listening a lot to Ultravox but I have never seen them live so I thought to myself now’s the time to do it. I was wrong.
Tickets are starting at 485 Swedish kronor! To “translate” this amount of money in other currencies it would be approximately $70, €55 or £45. For a band that peaked their career some 30 years ago. This is ridiculous.
I doubt that Ultravox is to blame so no shadow shall fall on them. But instead of buying myself a ticket to their show I will listen to this song and watch the fantastic music video over and over again. For free.
Ultravox – Love’s great adventure is found on the record “The collection” released in 1984.
Some songs just fit right in and I cannot explain why. It is like character “The Dude” in the movie “The Big Lebowski”; he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. This song fits right in right now this day.
Ramona Falls – Sqworm is found on the record “Prophet” released in 2012.
The Hultsfred music festival is currently on-going in the southern parts of Sweden and I will have to say that their line-up is nothing but brilliant. I would to go there but I am not that eager to sleep in a tent at field far away from the “real” world.
Anyway, if I for a moment pretend that I would be there my priority of the day would have been The Cure but second to that I would not have missed Bombay Bicycle Club. Something tells me they are a great live act. Well, well my comfort will be to spin their latest single one more time.
Bombay Bicycle Club – Lights out, words gone is found on the record “A different kind of fix” released in 2011.
I have seen at least 1000 concerts probably a lot more so it is rare these days to catch an artist or a group that I have not seen on stage already. It will happen tonight though at it is in my opinion a legend!
Seventeen years have passed since the last time, but live tonight in Sweden, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Tom Petty – Don’t come around here no more is found on the record “Southern accents” released in 1985.
despite this love; I can’t forgive when you say forget it.”
From out of the blue new material released by Maximo Park. I was a big fan of their 2007 release “Our earthly pleasures” while their 2009 release “Quicken the heart” was slightly disappointing.
My hope for the new album is quite high though after hearing the first single released; I like what I hear.
Maximo Park – Hips and lips is found on the record “The national health” released in 2012.
So Jill Hives is not a real person. Apparently Robert Polard of Guided By Voices once upon a time misheard the title of the TV soap opera “The best of our lives”.
I am actually quite happy that he misheard the title don’t you agree that “Jill Hives” sounds way much cooler.
Guided By Voices – The best of Jill Hives is found on the record “Earthquake glue” released in 2003.
Today the brand new album of the group 2:54 released, something that I certainly is looking forward to hear. If the album is as good as this single well then there no question that 2:54 has released something excellent.
2:54 – You’re Early is found on the record “2:54” released in 2012.
“We don't want your laws. So take 'em back right now.
They're bullshit anyhow.
It's time we had our say. The injustice cannot stay.
They stabbed us in the back.
And you can feel it bleeding if your heart's beating now.”
My first experience of Pennywise was when I caught them playing live at a festival about 15 years ago. The gig was assuredly chaotic; in the end Pennywise invited numerous people in the audience to join them on stage causing Pennywise to be forever banned from playing again at this festival again.
A few weeks ago our paths crossed again when I learned that Pennywise has released a new album. Again chaotic, intensive and filled with energy; it sure is good to hear Pennywise again.
Pennywise – Let us hear your voice is found on the record “All or nothing” released in 2012.
I confess; I did some drinking last night which caused my start of today to be a little bit… slow. Following the somewhat rough start of the day I got up to speed. Filled with energy I manage to get so many things done today.
And now when summarizing I feel like my day has been exactly like this song, a slow start, an energetic end.
Green Day – Brain stew/Jaded is found on the record “Insomniac” released in 1995.
My band played here a lot in the nineties when we had
A lot of female fans and fuck they all were cute
Now I just sign posters for guys in tennis shoes.”
Well what do you know? I consider myself as a person that knows the weird and wonderful world of music. About 20 years ago I started to listen to the band Red House Painters and I have been a fan since.
When Red House Painters called it the quits I continued to listen to the brain behind the band Mark Kozelek who released a number of solo albums, as Red House Painters great albums too.
Then things became quite… or so I thought. Because just the other day I was informed that Mark Kozelek has formed another band, Sun Kil Moon and that they had been around for quite some time, such a nice and welcomed surprise.
At the same time it made me question my own knowledge about music, how could I have missed Sun Kil Moon when I have been listening to Red House Painters and Mark Kozelek? Thinking twice this made me realize that this is the beauty of music, discovering new groups, new artists and new songs so instead of curse the fact that I have not listened to Sun Kil Moon until now I am grateful that I have finally discovered them.
Sun Kil Moon – Sunshine in Chicago is found on the record “Among the leaves” released in 2012.
I went to my home town for a couple of hours today. My home time may be a small speck on the map but I was expecting at least something lively going there. How wrong I was...
Morrissey – Every day is like Sunday is found on the record “Viva hate” released in 1988.
“Enola Gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday
Oho it can't describe the feeling and the way you lied.”
I have learned something today, June 2 is the Nuclear Abolition Day something that I have been unaware of until now.
Maybe it is politically incorrect of me to choose this one as the song of the day, Enola Gay was also the name of the aircraft that carried and dropped the first atomic bomb causing extensive destruction of the Japanese city Hiroshima.
On the other hand, one may see this as an extremely scary reminder of the use of nuclear power.
OMD – Enola Gay is found on the record “Organisation” released in 1980.
"Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find."
Live and acoustic in Stockholm tonight, Steve Kilbey and Marty Willson-Piper of The Church. Most likely the concert of the year.
The Church - Under the Milky Way tonight is found on the "Starfish" released in 1995.
