Conor Oberst is back with new material, fairly happy for being Conor Oberst. This is a catchy little tune.
Not a bad thing though; I like what I hear. Conor Oberst – Governor’s ball is found on the forthcoming record “Upside down mountain” scheduled to be released in 2014.
"So I try Put your hands in the sky Surrender Remember We'll be here forever And we'll never say goodbye."
1992 was a very important year in my “music life”, it is the year when The Cure released “Wish” a record that widen my musical mindset to include guitar-based music not just electronic music.
Still to this day it is my opinion that “Wish” is the best record that has ever been released. It is one of these records that I never get tired of. Enjoy this masterpiece as a start, and then check out the rest of the record. The Cure – From the edge of the deep green sea is found on the record “Wish” released in 1992.
"The father’s eyes said "Beautiful! How beautiful you are!" The boy’s eyes said "How beautiful! She glitters like a star!" The child's eyes uttered joy And stilled my heart with sadness For the way we are."
As I hinted a few weeks ago I am heading back to London today for a weekend stay in the British capitol. The last time I was here I had a fairly open agenda, this time it is the other way around I will spend the weekend together with The Cure.
Tonight I am heading to the Royal Albert Hall to spend about three hours together with The Cure. How I am looking forward to this. The Cure – How beautiful you are… is found on the record “Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me” released in 1987.
""Oh!" she said, "I suppose you seldom think about me "Now" she said, "now that you've a fam'ly of your own" "Still" she said, "it's so blessed good to feel your body!" "Lord!" she said" "Casey it's a shame to be alone!""
A person that once upon a time was a member of a country “super-group”, The Highwaymen, is Kris Kristofferson. The other members were Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson so it was indeed a super-group.
Nevertheless I strongly feel that Kris Kristofferson is at his very best when he is performing under his own name. I have spent hours and hours listening to his often very sad lyrics. And you know me by now, sad lyrics and I am there!
There are so many songs that I am tempted to pick today but in the end I decided go with this one, so incredible sad that it is painful to listen to.
Yet irresistible. Kris Kristofferson – Casey’s last ride is found on the record “Kristofferson” released in 1970.
"Wake up, it's time to test you Did you wake up with that impression? Better unfold it and get done with And get that rip attention from me."
The work day today has been beyond intense. It has been one of these days at work where I at a certain point in the late afternoon just sat down at my chair and burst out laughing due to the madness that have been going on.
Anyways… things turned out fairly good in the end, which feels encouraging now here at the end of the day.
Fucked Up – Paper the house is found on the forthcoming record “Glass boys” scheduled to be released in 2014.
She said she didn't know me Now I'm not so sweet."
For some reason I dislike the band name The Music, it is too simple, it is too obvious. But a good song is a good song so despite the band name, this is a song worth high-lightning. The Music – Take the long road and walk it is found on the record “The music” released in 2001.
So I heard this song and I thought to myself, “hey cool, a new single from The Drums”. I was wrong about the band but I still believe there similarities between The Drums and School.
What do you think? Am I right or wrong? School – SoLong is found on the single “SoLong” released in 2013. The quote above is a brilliant scrawl I discovered on a park bench some fifteen years ago.
"Welcome into this word of happiness where you can talk and you can dress And you can sleep 'cause you can't guess What they've done to Africa and to South America Next Honduras, they'll gonna kick your ass, so..."
You know it by now. Every Friday need its weekend kick-off song!
This is explosive! What a rush! Mano Negra – Welcome in occident is found on the record “King of the Bongo” released in 1991.
"I wonder what it's like Seeing through your eyes You've offered me to have a try But I was always late."
After mentioning Nina Persson yesterday it is close to impossible to not mention her first band The Cardigans. I have never been a huge fan of The Cardigans, to be perfectly honest I think their music is boring.
There is one exception though, this recording filled to the brim with catchy pop tunes driven by a base of electronic beats and sounds. I like it!
The Cardigans – Hanging around is found on the record “Gran turismo” released in 1998.
"I'm tired of these lies, want to float with you My ocean, my heart anchor you to me You can blink like a star or sink like a stone in the sea."
Following a career in The Cardigans and in A Camp, Nina Persson now continues her career by releasing a solo record. This first single is quite nice actually; I may have to dig deeper into the rest of the record. Nina Persson – Animal heart is found on the record “Animal heart” released in 2014.
"Dull my senses steal my pride principles denied."
So… I got this cryptic internet link from my brother, a link that I hardly dared to click but when I finally did I was thrilled to see what was revealed.
Another one of those, by me, since long forgotten masterpieces. Hollywood Beyond – What’s the colour of money is found on the record “If” released in 1987.
"When the world is too dark And I need the light inside of me I'll walk into a bar And drink fifteen pints of beer."
I am not Irish, I do not have any Irish roots nor do I have Irish relatives. Nevertheless March 17 is, at least to me, St. Patrick’s Day.
These days I guess that many people use St. Patrick’s Day as an excuse to down a pint of Guinness or two. I for sure have done the same a few times. But I am also fascinated by the story/legend when St. Patrick banished snakes from Ireland. Dig deeper into that story some time; that is my advice. The Pogues – Streams of whiskey is found on the record “Red roses for me” released in 1984.
"Awoke from a long one That came on the heels of a day Where sun would arise And then grant us the kindness of ray."
Until now I have not been a huge fan of Midlake. Although I like the kind of music Midlike releases they have always been a bit boring in my ears. Their latest single may be the “game-changer” though; I must say I like this song a lot.
I have the chance to catch Midlike live tonight, maybe I should grab that chance.
Midlake – The old and the young is found on the record “Antiphon” released in 2013.
"I used to think that the day would never come I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun..."
When looking at this blog and realizing that I have published about 900 songs by now I find it hard to believe that this song have not been among them yet.
This is a song that has been a “faithful companion” of mine since it was released approximately twenty-five years ago. I bet it will be a “faithful companion” the next twenty-five years or so too. New Order – True faith is found on the record “Substance” released in 1987.
"There she goes, there she goes again she calls my name, pulls my train no-one else could heal my pain."
Another Friday, another Friday song. This is yet another example of a song that works perfectly for me as weekend kickoff song. The La’s – There she goes is found on the record “The La’s” released in 1990.
"Don’t you know we’re heading for tomorrow Don’t you know they’re waiting for us out there Don’t you know we’re heading for tomorrow Don’t let go of me."
It has been about five years since The Confusions last record and to tell you the truth I have never been a huge fan of their work.
Nevertheless I will have to admit that I like this new single from The Confusions a lot. In a recent interview I read that the band is “recording something that seems to be an album”; based in this single I do hope that is a fact. The Confusions – It’s so quiet, it’s so cold is found on the single “It’s so quite it’s so cold” released in 2014.
"So long ago, I don't remember when That's when they say I lost my only friend Well they said she died easy of a broken heart disease As I listened through the cemetery trees."
According to my brother this is the one song that defines the nineties when it comes to music. There is no better example of a typical nineties song according to my brother.
I do understand that he means and I can at least to some extent agree with his opinion. But as typical as the song may be I still enjoy it quite a lot when I listen to it. The Wallflowers – One headlight is found on the record “Bringing down the horse” released in 1996.
"And that frankly will not fly You'll hear the shrillest highs And lowest lows with the windows down And this is guiding you home."
I was reminded by this sparkling little tune the other day. One of those “makes-me-feel-good-songs”. The Postal Service – Such great heights is found on the record “Give up” released in 2003.
"They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself."
Tonight I will finally get a chance to catch the band Toy live. I have been looking forward to this moment; there is something about their music that makes me believe they are a really good live act. Toy – You won’t be the same is found on the record “Join the dots” released in 2013. The quote above is taken from the American artist Andy Warhol.
"Talking to you makes me wanna shake and shout Touching you makes me wanna come right out You could never want me the same way I want you I'm love tornado struck... I don't know what to do."
A year ago something simply wonderful happened I have been so very happy since.
One unexpected consequence of what happened a year ago is that The Raveonettes will forever have a special place in my heart… The Raveonettes – The great love sound is found on the record “Chain gang of love” released in 2003.
"But whenever I look at the question of how to live, the answer's always staring me in the face.
I'm already doing it."
Some songs are of the type that they grow on me, like this one. It did not catch my full attention immediately but after a number of spins I just like the song better and better. I am tempted to say that I have to add yet another band to my “dig deeper into their catalogue” list. This Is Head – Staring lenses is found on the record “The album ID” released in 2013. The quote above is taken from the English artist Damien Hirst.
"Time passes so fast My mind still living in the past I’m drowning in nostalgia. Time passes so fast…"
And speaking of nostalgia… I grew listening to electronic music, among my first idols were Yazoo, Depeche Mode, Howard Jones but also a few Swedish artists like NASA and Mobile Homes.
Like Depeche Mode, Mobile Homes still exist as a band and today they do celebrate their 30th year as a band by being live on stage accompanied by a lot of friends/guest artists.
Maybe I should be a bit nostalgic myself tonight. The Mobile Homes – Nostalgia is found on the record “The world will listen” released in 2001.
"Here comes the chuchu, come on Steaming to you through the gone times Nostalgia locomotive It gives you a hell of a ride."
Radio. I still listen to the radio ever so often. You know that real physical radio playing me FM waves. And more often than seldom what is played on the radio do have some kind of impact on me.
Sometimes it makes me discover a new wonderful track or band. Sometimes it emphasizes why I loathe certain type of music. And sometimes it reminds me of songs that I used to like a lot but as weeks, months, and years passed I have lost track of them.
Like in this case, a song that I used to play all the time back in the days… The Mo and Kris LeMans – Nostalgia locomotive is found on the record “Night at the zoo” released in 2004.
"Well there's a crack in the ceiling And there's a hole in the sky And there's a government warning They don't like our kind But now it's three in the morning And I'm feeling just fine And I just want to occupy your mind."
It has been a while since I last discovered new Irish music but now it has happened again. Villagers - Occupy your mind is found on the single "Occupy your mind" released in 2014.
"Nothing else can hurt us now
No loss, our love's been hung on a cross
Nothing seems to make a sound
And now it's all so clear somehow
Nothing really matters now
Now we're gone and on our way."
When listening to The Black Hollies I cannot help thinking about the band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. So in my mind this is a most natural continuation of yesterday’s choice of song. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Love burns is found on the record “B.R.M.C” released in 2001.
"Under the overpass down by the sound, we’ll be the only ones. Forget about your troubles ‘cause there’s no one around; we’ll be the only ones."
I am a huge fan the sad, gloomy and “depressed” kind of music. This is really my cup of tea.
At the same time I have a hard time to resist the sort of dirty, rattling, clattering type of music, this time in the shape of The Black Hollies. The Black Hollies – Somewhere between here and now is found on the record “Somewhere between here and now” released in 2013.
"Breathe out So I can breathe you in Hold you in And now I know you've always been Out of your head Out of my head I sang."
I have many, many things to do this today, better get started early.
Still, like this song, a slow start then acceleration all along the way… Foo Fighters – Everlong is found on the record “The colour and the shape” released in 1997.
"And let you step outside In the fever of evening No one remembers your name No one tries."
Back in the autumn of 2011 I headed to a concert with a band that I had heard only a few songs from. It turned out to be an excellent decision since The Horrors were an awesome live act.
Just the other day I discovered that The Horrors are about to release their forth studio album. This is first taster of that album. And a great one if you ask me. The Horrors – I see you is found on the forthcoming record “Luminous” scheduled to be released in 2014.
